Rec Player Evaluations - Volunteer Instructions:

1. First thing:  Make sure you know who is bringing equipment and that you have the right equipment.  The correct sized basketballs can be found on the Rules of the web site for your specific division.  You need 5 basketballs of this size, pumped up with air, 5 pennies and 5 to 10 cones.  Consult Shonna and Rebecca to confirm equipment is there.  Also  “notebooks” for coaches, registration list for registration desk, pens, paper, jumbo Sharpies and stickers.

2. Determine who will be the Drill Lead (run the drills) and who will be the Registration Lead (run the desk).  Each adult needs to take one of these positions and each gets a HS/MS volunteer youth to help him/her.

3. Arrange the gym in the following way:

      a) We use the “side” rims (1/2 of the gym) .  The other ½ of the gym is where you can set up the sign-in desk, and the “queue” of kids waiting to be evaluated.

      b) Use the ½ court closest to the entrance to set up sign-in desk and “queue”.  Use the far side of the gym to conduct the evaluations.  Make sure rim height are correct.  Web site rules has rim heights.

      c) Set up appropriate seating (chairs/bleachers) for all the head coaches (head coaches only) to sit near the players being evaluated (on far side of gym).  Put them on side of half court, not under hoop.

      d) Set up 5 cones on near side of gym, “behind” registration desk, to begin your queue of kids.  Start queuing up kids in the staging area by putting kids behind one of the 5 cones to line them up.

      e) Arrange the registration desk so it is reasonably far away from the court you are playing on, families can wind the line around and stay off the court, and out of the cold.

4. Registration Lead:  Sign kids in and assign numbers on their backs with the half-sheet stickers and markers.  Answer questions from parents.

5. Evaluation Leads:  Important:  Explain the process and the duties to the new coaches.  Give them tips of how to record information, what they are looking for.  Explain drills.  Preview Draft process.  Have a little meeting with them before you start and after you are complete.  Tell them to look for ball handers!  After first couple rounds, look for good kids, keep it simple.

6. Go over Wait list kids (“W”), and the importance of evaluating Coaches’ kids (“C”).  Also point out siblings go to the seam coach/team. (“S”)

7. Line up the first 5 children, have them face the wall so their backs are to the coaches.  Yell out the #’s to the coaches, make sure the coaches can hear you.  Coaches should just write down #’s, not full names.

8. Players run a sprint down and back.

9. Give each player basketball, players speed dribble down and back.  Keep the kids in the same order for steps 9, 10 and 11.  They will often get scrambled.

10. Line up 5 players in line on right side.  Again in same order.  Have them do right-handed layup down and back, on both baskets.  It helps to have the HS/MS kid volunteer demonstrate this.

11. Repeat #12, except shoot 8 to 10 foot outside shot.  Put cone on the court.  The HS/MS kid volunteer can put down and pick up the cone on the other side of the court.  It really helps the younger kids to see the cone so they know where to shoot.

12. After 12 & 13, take the first 5 and bring them over to a corner to put on a penny.  The HS/MS kid volunteer can help with this, while you get the next 5 started.

13. Get a new 5 kids and repeat step 9 to 14.

14. When you get 2 sets of 5 kids, one with pennys on, let them scrimmage each other for 2 minutes.  Keep the game going, get the whole gym (all the kids waiting in the queue) to cheer whenever someone scores.  Make it fun.  Don’t call a lot of fouls.  For little ones, remind them its man to man and tell them which way to go.  Don’t let one get ball-hog the whole time.  Let other kids bring it up.  Keep it to 2 minutes.  Have a big 10 second left moment where you yell out the clock ticking down.  The kids love this.  Have the whole gym give all the kids a round of applause after the 2 minute scrimmage is complete.

15. After 2 min scrimmage, stop the game, get all the pennys back, send these 10 kids and their families home.

16. Repeat step 9.

At the very end, ask the coaches if they have any questions, and preview again the draft process, which is the next step in the season.
